Key stages for safer injections

1. Preparing the equipment

Disposable field drapes make it possible to set out all necessary equipment on a clean surface and thereby reduce the risks of contaminating the product and/or equipment during the preparation stage.

2. Disinfecting the hands

Numerous bacteria live on the skin of the hands. Disinfecting the hands before an injection significantly reduces the risks of abscesses and other infections.

3. Preparing the product

Cookers are used to dissolve the product in water for injection, and can be used to heat the product if necessary. A pill box with cutter and crusher can be used to help dissolve the product, as can the addition of a sterile acid.

4. Filtering the product

In order to eliminate certain unwanted elements from the mixture, such as insoluble particles and bacteria, and thereby reduce the associated risks, the product can be filtered using a membrane filter .

5. Disinfecting the injection site

A tourniquet can be used to help find a vein. The injection site must then be disinfected using an alcohol swab or an antiseptic wipe.

6. Injecting the product

The product can be injected using a fixed needle syringe or a syringe to which the needle of choice can be attached.

7. Applying pressure to the injection site

To promote healing, pressure should be applied to the injection site using a post-injection dry swab or a sterile compress.

8. Disposing of waste

Syringes, needles, and post-injection compresses must be discarded using a safe healthcare waste container to avoid the risk of contamination. All other equipment may be disposed of with household waste.
